LASIK for improved vision

August 11th, 2008 Betchay Posted in Gadgets/technology, health 2 Comments »

I’ve been waiting to write about this since I know someone who has been benefitting from LASIK surgery for the past eight years - my elder sister. She visited the Philippines in September, 2000 and getting the surgery was one of her agenda. I haven’t heard much of LASIK then and I was amazed to know that even if the procedure is specialized, it doesn’t take a lot of time for a patient to recover. As far as I can remember, she was just in the hospital for a day!

Modern LASIK combines 3D mapping and customized treatment for the 1st all-laser technology. The said procedure have been approved by no less than the US military and NASA for their personnel. (That says a lot!) However, it’s still not for everyone as those with thin, irregularly shaped corneas (or those with unrealistic expectations) or about 20-25% are considered to be ineligible.

My husband, who’s been interchanging between corrective eye glasses and contact lenses for the past 25 years, is interested in this surgery. He believes he will look better without the glasses - so vain! He’s attracted with the fast and nearly painless surgery, but I told him to get more LASIK information. It only takes an estimated 2 hours to check eligibility for the surgery.

Best web hosting at the cheapest price

August 2nd, 2008 Betchay Posted in Blogs/Websites, Gadgets/technology 2 Comments »

My web hosting subscription will end this month and I’m still thinking whether I’m going to renew with my current web host or find the best web hosting at the cheapest price.

My Wordpress blog is hosted on a paid web hosting. I prefer it this way so I have full control of everything. I don’t like the rules that comes with free web hosting services. What I need is a multiple domain hosting since I am running three blogs.

Webhostinggeeks.com has listings of hundreds of web hosting services complete with pricing, features and most importantly, reviews! I often rely on customer reviews on important purchases. I need to be sure that my blogs are up at least 99.9% of the time. I had experienced not being able to access my own blog before! I think that was two years ago and that same month I transferred web hosts three times! That was such a headache!

Choosing the perfect digital camera

July 31st, 2008 Betchay Posted in Gadgets/technology, Shopping 2 Comments »

It wasn’t long ago when I bought my second digital camera. It took me several weeks searching and reading the internet for information on which camera to buy considering my needs and my budget. It’s really not easy to buy an “important” item if you’re not a millionaire!

Anyway, I chose my Canon Powershot for a number of reasons. First, I wanted something that is a “hybrid” - point and shoot with full manual controls. I wanted to learn photography someday and I thought that getting that camera would be best for me. The 8MP resolution and 6x zoom is great too. Plus the one I have is powered by two AA batteries and that’s very convenient. Most of all, I like the video capability of this camera, which is better than my sister’s Sony digital camera.

It’s truly not easy to buy a gadget. I loved my 4MP ultra-compact that I used for more than three years. It wasn’t easy finding something to replace it. Someday though, I’d like to get my hands on a DSLR camera.

If you’re having a hard time finding that perfect digital camera, try this Digital Cameras Buying Guide. I just remembered about the camera since it’s a Thursday, time for our weekly themed photo blog!

Commercial emails that people read

July 25th, 2008 Betchay Posted in Gadgets/technology No Comments »

I get a lot of emails everyday on my four very active email accounts. I’d say I receive about 200 emails on daily basis from friends, family, e-groups, subscriptions and commercial emails. I read a few of the commercial or marketing emails but there are more that I don’t bother to even open. The few that I read are often those that are done professionally.

A lot of companies still use email as a marketing tool. That’s why it’s important that they use a reliable Email Marketing Software so they could get their message across to their intended readers.

An Email Marketing Software should allow a business to create visually appealing emails easily whether using graphics or just text. Who would read a sloppily made marketing email anyway? I don’t because my first impression would be is that it came from an unreliable source. However, I do spend time to read something that looks profesionally made.

Do you want to know how to make commercial emails that people read? Check out the Education page of this Email Marketing Software.

Asus EEE PC 1000h

July 21st, 2008 Betchay Posted in Gadgets/technology 6 Comments »

Asus EEE PC 1000hWe had torrential rains during the weekend, but it didn’t stop us from going out. We headed to Yongsan Electronics Market, which is the most convenient place for us to go on a rainy day. The subway station nearest us is only about 20 meters away and arriving at Yongsan station doesn’t require any use of our umbrellas. We visited the bookstore first on the 7th floor of I’Mall. Then we headed down to the 5th floor where the laptop stores are.

I posted before that I’m interested in getting the MSI Wind. It’s a good thing that I waited since the Asus EEE PC 1000h is now out in the market. Its specs is identical to the Wind, but it’s priced more at 642,000 won compared to the MSI UMPC at 589,000 won. However, the newly released Asus has a 6-cell battery and a Dolby sound system. Great!

I didn’t see any MSI Wind yesterday and the seller said that they are sold out! I got a chance to test the Asus EEE PC 1000h and I like how responsive the trackpad is. I usually hate using trackpads on laptops. My husband was urging me to buy the 1000h yesterday but I told him I could wait for ten days more or just before school starts. Who knows what will come out next in ten days?! ;)

Cisco certification = career credibility

July 21st, 2008 Betchay Posted in Gadgets/technology 2 Comments »

When I was still in high school planning which course to take up in college, one of my brothers advised me to try an IT course. That was in 1990 and he had known eversince that a career in information technology will not only be lucrative but in-demand as well. I didn’t take his advise seriously but I’m not also kicking my head over it. I just thought that if I were still back home and working on a career, I’d seriously be considering Cisco certification. IMO, computer geeks are cool! ;)

I know how important a certification is specially in information technology, wherein what you know a year ago could be obsolete now. This is the reason why getting certified is imperative in this industry. The career opportunities for an IT certified personnel is limitless. I’ve been reading IT forums and one rant I remember is that of an IT “expert” who’s had a 10-yr career but had a difficult time finding a job in networking because he lacks the required certification. Sometimes, just experience is not enough proof of credibility. However, not all certifications are equal. This is where a Cisco certification makes a huge difference. There are general and specialist certifications for entry, associate, professional and expert levels.

Cisco is a world-renowed name when it comes to networking. Having that CC- prefix in your resume is not only cool but adds credibility in what you do best. Imagine having more than one CCs in your resume!Cisco certification“>Cisco certification = career credibility.
