Korea Spring Flowers 2016

The only thing I like about winter is that spring comes after it. When the double digit temperature starts, we wait eagerly for the flowers to bloom. And we do that EVERY year ~ especially with the cherry blossoms. The KMA announced yesterday that cherry blossoms will bloom 5 days earlier than last year. Of course, it’s just a prediction ~ putting in mind what happened in 2014 when they were in full bloom before April, which was a first in Seoul.

Here are the three most awaited spring flowers for 2016.

You know it’s really spring in Korea when forsythia are in bloom. These golden yellow blossoms are so beautiful to look at. This year it will be in the middle of March in Jeju-do and the last week of the month in Seoul.

Likewise, jindale or azalea are expected to bloom around the middle of March in Jeju-do and on the last week of March in Seoul.

Cherry blossoms is the most awaited spring flower in Korea. Waiting for them is like a ritual – you do it every year! They usually bloom during the first week of April and peak by the middle of the month.

    Hi Ms. Betchay,

    Good day
I would like to ask the usual weather for in Korea by 2nd week of March? March 12-19,2016. We will be visiting by these dates. And also , are flowers already seen on these dates or empty trunks of trees from winter season? and should we wear thick coat?
Thank you so much ms betchay

Hi Ginger! It’s gonna be a lot warmer next week, probably 10-15 degrees. You will not need thick winter jackets by this time. Just bring something that you could layer ~ a sweater and a cardigan. The flowers won’t be blooming until the last week of March so yeah, you’ll be greeted by empty trunks of trees.
