2009 International Sky Leisure Expo

We had a rainy Saturday afternoon and my family spent it at the Seoul National Science Museum, located near Changgyeonggung (Changgyeong Palace). Needless to say, we enjoyed our time there that we already scheduled a visit to the Gwacheon National Science Museum.

Last Sunday, I wasn’t able to watch Pacquaio “dismantle” Hatton (to borrow from Mayweather Sr) as we prepared to go to Ansan in Gyeonggi-do for the “2009 International Sky Leisure Expo.” My son loves airplanes (and trains, cars, ships, bikes and all those boy stuff!) and he comes first before mommy’s desire to watch the fight.

Anyway, the expo is all about leisure sky sport like kite flying, paragliding, hot air balloon and small planes. It opened on May 1st and will run until tomorrow, May 5 or Children’s Day. The venue is located near Hanyang University and the Gyeonggi Technopark.

Aside from the “Sky Leisure Expo”, the government of Ansan is also holding the “Street Arts Festival” which will also run until tomorrow. Since we arrived in Ansan at around noon, we didn’t spend much time at the said street festival. Ansan is worth visiting not only for the festivals mentioned but for tulips as well. I haven’t seen so many tulips in Korea in varying colors (from white to yellow to pink and purple to brown!) as in that city.

The highlight of the “Sky Leisure Expo” is the air show. They have two performances – one at 10:30 in the morning and 2:00 in the afternoon. We ate lunch (burger and chips) at the makeshift “Outback” food stall after paying the 3,000 won admission ticket per adult.

There is an exhibit of small planes and helicopters outside, just beside the runway. Some of the visitors even spread their mats under the wings of some planes to hide from the glaring sun. There are also two exhibit halls showcasing products for sky leisure sports (?). There are also simulations that visitors to the expo can participate in. Unfortunately, my son doesn’t have the patience to wait in line. He doesn’t even have the patient to wait for his turn to have his picture taken with the Korean Air Force fighter pilots.

We truly enjoyed the expo that we didn’t mind having to drive for an hour back to Jongro (our district in Seoul). Both my boys had fun posing with the mascots too…

I’m also looking forward to attending a car show. My preschooler loves cars and I’m pretty sure he’d go gaga over them (and the girls). He might want to have a Ferrari when he grows up, or another sleek car, which is fine since Ferrari parts are available online!
