I’m not in the health profession but two of my favorite shows are about the health profession – House and Grey’s Anatomy. I first heard about the mitral valve replacement from an episode in the first season of Grey’s Anatomy. That was almost three years ago. I heard or read about it again in a news article about a young Taiwanese pop singer and actress, Angela Zhang. She was diagnosed with heart mitral valve prolapse early this year. Her doctors advised her to undergo surgery.
What is a mitral valve anyway? Almost all the definitions I’ve seen are a bit difficult to understand for a “non-medical person” like me. It’s a good thing that a page at the University of Maryland Medical Center’s (UMM) website explains its function in a manner that’s a little easier to understand. Incidentally, the UMM also specializes in mitral valve repair wherein the narrowing or leakage of the mitral valve is treated. Cardiac surgeons at the UMM are specialists and they are the leaders in mitral valve surgery. If you or someone you know needs more information about this, the best place to visit is the UMM website!
