Tourist visa to Korea for Pinoys

by Betchay on July 31, 2005

UPDATE: You might want to read this simpler entry for the REQUIREMENTS IN APPLYING FOR A TOURIST VISA (C-3) TO KOREA.

If you’re a Filipino and you want to go to Korea, the first thing that you must do is to acquire a visa… and it isn’t easy!

More than a decade ago, visas are not required for Pinoys. They can come and go as much as they wanted but things changed in 1994 when the Philippine government requested to the Korean government to require visas for Filipinos travelling to their country. That’s what I learned from watching “Magandang Gabi Bayan” three or four years ago.

Let me talk about the individual tourist visa. I had applied for a tourist visa almost three years ago but I was turned down for some reason. I wasn’t disheartened but my hubby (then fiance) was… I remember reading an article where DOLE secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas said that it’s harder to get a Korean tourist visa than to get a US visa. It’s probably true…

Unlike a US visa application, there is no interview conducted when applying for a Korean tourist visa. They also don’t require additional documents like land titles or car registration, and the likes. What you will need to provide them are… (1) bank certificate stating your savings, (2) certificate of employment showing your salary and position, (3) latest ITR (income tax return), (4) your passport and a copy, plus the (5) visa application form and (6) 2×2 pictures and if you have been invited, (7) a notarized invitation letter.

You have to go to the embassy really early! They open at 9AM but you have to line up outside before they let you in. Where do you have to go? The Korean Embassy is located at Pacific Star Building at the corners of Gil Puyat Ave. and Makati Ave. Right in front of a gas station, you can’t miss it!

When I applied for my tourist visa, I was there as early as 7AM and the line was already long… After arriving at the place, just follow the queue outside. At around 10 minutes before 9AM, the guard will let people in. You have to get a Visitor’s Pass by providing an ID. It doesn’t have to be a fancy ID, the one issued by the postal office will do. You’ll have to ride the elevator and get off on the 18th floor. There will be another line before entering the main office. The guard (who’s really friendly and nice) will ask you if it’s your first time to apply for a visa (in general) or not. If it is then he will give you a number for Window 3. If not, then you’ll be provided a number for Window 4. You’ll have to sit down and wait until it is your turn. The Korean lady on Window 3 is Ms. Park Ok (at least, the last time I was there)…

When your number is shown on the LCD display, you’ll have to go to Window 3 and present your documents. Like I told you, there’s no need for an interview. If your documents are complete, she’ll staple them and give you a claim stub for your passport. If you have submitted an incomplete set of documents, she’ll ask you to come back and complete your documents. If you’re planning to stay in Korea for more than 59 days, you’ll have to pay 1,500 pesos as visa fee. A stay of less than 59 days is free. Paying doesn’t guarantee an approval.

Application usually ends at 12PM. If your number is not called at that time, you’ll have to come back another day and fall in line, and get another number! Hehe…

Waiting time is usually 7 days. To claim your passport, you’ll have to come in the afternoon of the designated date in your claim stub. Again, you’ll have to queue outside and wait for the embassy to open. I really hate waiting because it makes me all nervous and excited!

If you get a visa, congratulations! If not, then try again later… after 6 months!

My mother applied for a tourist visa two weeks ago and got hers last Tuesday. She’s been here last year for our wedding and it just took her three days to get her visa. We sent her a notarized invitation last year but not for this year. She has a US resident visa so that probably helped her. Anyway, she’s planning to come here on the 7th of August via Asiana Airlines (whose unionized pilots are currently on strike) from the Clark International Airport. The airport is a 15-minute drive from our residence in Angeles City (we live about 200 meters from the gates of Clark).

Hi there to all! I just want to know, why there is such a comment as getting Korean Visa is harder than getting a U.S visa? Are they that strict? When there are so many Koreans in the Philippines? Uhmp! :-)

Hello…. Number two (2) documents needed. Certificate of employment showing your salary and position. What if I can’t provide such thing. I’m not working for a year already. I’m just a private home base online tutor. Any advice…..thanks

HI Richard! I can’t really answer. The embassy people are very particular with the required documents. They make adjustments though for special cases like for the dependents of Filipino expats working in Korea or those who are married to Koreans. Otherwise, they’re quite strict with the documentary requirements.

A friend went to the embassy in the Phils to apply for a Korean visa. She gave all her requirements and she was given a slip to come back next week. On her way home, she found out that her ITR slip is still in her envelope. The person in the window didn’t check her requirements. What pisses my friend off is that she handed over everything but they missed out one. Shouldn’t they check the requirements first before they give the slip? Will the ITR be a ground for denial? Can my friend still follow up and give the ITR to the consul?

Reply

23 Betchay July 4, 2009 at 8:30 am

Hi MJ! From my experience, they checked all the documents I submitted before I was even given the slip of paper. I’d witnessed some applicants with incomplete documents being asked to come back to submit them. If your friend has a visa from another country, she might have a better chance to get a Korean visa. Her employment certificate will also help. I hope she gets one though.

hello, for all those unemployed who are asking what are the requirements to get a tourist visa, you could use the ITR(income tax return) and bank certificate of your parents in lieu of your own. in addition, if they are employed, you have to submit their employer’s certificate, but if not and they have business, mayor’s permit will do. likewise, accompany these documents with your birth certificate. if you’re a fresh grad, like me, submit also your graduation certificate. hope this will help. if you have further inquiries, call the korean embassy for better relief…thanks. God bless.

Ms. Betchay,

My Fiancee wants to come back to Korea to visit me. She has all her required documents except for, 1. work certificate, and 2. income tax return. what can She do in order to get a visa to visit me here. She was here in December 2008 to may 2009. Is there anything that can be done in her situation? Short of marriage there in the Philippines, I cant think of anything else. I do however have a Korean friend that brought his Girlfriend here for a visit, and she said she did not need the ITR or the work certificate since he was a korean national. Is this True?

Help Please

Mr. Malunkot

31 Betchay July 11, 2009 at 10:38 am

Mr. Malunkot… unfortunately, the embassy doesn’t accept incomplete documents but i’m wondering what kind of visa did she have when she was in korea? If she was a contract worker/EPS without any history of desertion, she could provide a document of her previous employment. If she’s been here it would actually be easier for her to get a visa (according to some).

When I applied for a tourist visa to come over to Korea to meet my (then) fiance’s parents, I got denied eventhough my documents are complete including an invitation letter. I had enough money in the bank (to buy a house in the Philippines) then and I was earning quite well, but I was barely a year at my company that time. I guess we can’t really tell who they’ll give visas to.

The best thing for her to do is to gather all her documents and line up early in the morning to apply for the tourist (C-3) visa and try. If they don’t accept her documents, ask what she needs to complete. Don’t forget to include that proof of previous employment in Korea.

She was Originally here on an E6 visa, she worked from December to may and went home after she completed her 6 months. She has no History of Desertion as it was her first time abroad. Will the contract she had while here suffice for a work certificate and ITR?

Reply

46 Jay July 29, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Hi Lyka, sagutin ko na rin tanong mo… :)
Normally, walang interview sa Embassy if you are applying for a tourist visa.
You’ll just have to submit complete documents (yung nakalagay duon sa taas ng site na ito)
In some cases, they’ll give you an interview form
which means they want to assess you more and your real purpose in traveling…
Ang mga tanong daw na common ay simple lang naman,
When are you going to travel?
Do you have any friends or relative there?
Where will you stay?
How long will you stay?

Those are not painful questions naman, when you got interviewed, just in case, just be confident sa harap ng consul. Kasi ang gusto lang naman nila ma-assess, if the tourist visa applicant would want to work in Korea or really just to travel.

God bless

This site is really wonderful. Since my first visit to Korea last year, this blog has really helped me a lot most especially in getting my Korean Visa.

Thanks God I got my second Korean visa last week. I’ll be flying to Korea by first or second week of August. I am so excited, I plan to stay there for 3 months so I need to apply for an extension.

Anybody here knows how to apply for a visa extension in Seoul?

Maraming salamat po! ^^

Nakabili na ako ng ticket for Aug 14, 2009. Ang mura pala sa Cebu pacific sobrang mura talga! Nakakatuwa… Though, hindi dito sa Angeles ang flight. I will have to go to Manila.
The ticket I bought last year when my family had our spring season tour in SK was 670 USD each (roundtrip, Asiana)
At cebu pacific it’s only 319 USD! (round trip) almost 50% less than Asiana! whew! Sana last year may cebu pacific na… Sayang din yun 3 pa man din kami last year.

Hello po. I posted here last night mukhang hindi na-save.

I have a concern.. medyo ibang nature din kasi siguro.

I’ve been to Korea last 2003 to 2004 as an exchange student.
Ngayon, 4 years na ko nagwwork dito sa Pilipinas, with the same company.. I have an ITR, employment cert, etc.. Medyo ok naman ang monthly salary ko. But I don’t have a decent sum of money (not even Php50K :( ) in the bank because I used up all my savings to build the family house.

I want to apply for a tourist visa because my Korean bestfriend will undergo surgery next month. Gusto ko sana i-surprise visit siya sa hospital and stay there even just for 1 week. :(

Would you think that without an invitation and a decent bank account, zero chance na ma-approve ang application ko…?

Thanks in advance…

i would want to apply for tourist visa for korea. i have been invited. i have the requirements with me. i have the invitation letter, letter of sponsorship and the certificates of income of my invitors. since i don’t have a job here in the philippines, they specified in the “letter of sponsorship” that they will pay for all my expenses when i stay in korea, including my plane ticket back and forth. they also specified the length of stay (90 days). but the invitation letter (in korean) has not been notarized, should it be notarized in korea? because the one who brought the invitation is here in the philippines for vacation and if i have it notarized in korea, he will have to send it back again to the philippines. i don’t want him to spend for additional mailing. also, do i need the photocopy of the passports of the invitors (i have 2 invitors)? thank you in advance..

hi.. this is micha again..
i forgot to mention something in my previous comment. i’m living in cebu and i contacted a travel agency. they told me the requirements for Korea tourist visa are the ff: invitation letter (if invited), letter of sponsorship (if sponsored), certificates of income of invitors, personal bank certificate, ITR if employed (but i’m not employed), and the processing fee of 1,500. the agency did not mention that the invitation letter must be notarized in korea and that the photocopy of the invitors’ passports are needed. they also did not mention about the 2×2 pictures of the applicant. that’s why i’m making sure right now regarding the requirements because only the agency will send my documents to the korean embassy in makati. i’m afraid i will be denied at first try because i don’t have the time to wait for another 6 months before i can reapply in case i get denied because my invitors want me to go with their families (who are currently in the phils.) when they go back to korea. thank you.

Hi Strawberry! The invitation letter is optional and only a Korean can invite. I think that’s nice of you to give him a surprise visit. If you can ask in advanced for an approval letter for your leave of absence at work, that might help too. As for your chances, I don’t really know. The best thing is to just do it!

I’ll be travelling with my live-in partner (we’re both separated from our first partners), my 3 kids aged 19,14 and 8 yrs.old. We’re planning to travel Dec.2010 but as early as now I would like to prepare the necessary documents that will be needed. My main concern is, what requirements will my 19 year old daughter need to submit? She hasn’t graduated high school yet and definitely not working. I could submit our applications together, Right? I really hope you could help me. Thanks

Hi Almira! If she’s still a student, she needs to submit a proof of enrolment like a school registration along with your documents.

hi ms.Betchay!! i have a problem and hoping your reply can help me a lot..I applied spouse visa at korean embassy but i was denied because they find out that my husband is not yet divorce to x-pinay wife..We need to wait 2 years before we can file annulment because we can only use presumptive death basis..it’s more than a year of waiting and i became pregnant..My korean son is now 3 months old and it’s very hard for me and my husband to be apart..It’s very difficult to bear the infant alone..So, we are thinking another option how can i go to korea more sooner..Can i apply a tourist visa..I am in doubt if the embassy can grant me a visa because i already applied for spouse visa last year..Please your advice is a big help..I am hoping for your kind consideration..THANKS IN ADVANCE…

Hi! Paano nakapagpakasal ang asawa mo legally sa Pilipinas? Pag kumuha siya ng family register at certificate of eligibility to contract marriage sa korean embassy, it means pwede siya magpakasal.

Hi. I called the Korean embassy here in the Philippines just now to re-confirm the list of requirements needed to apply for a tourist visa. I also told them that I have a copy of my husband’s documents who is currently employed under our government’s EPS system under POEA. I was disappointed to hear that they will not issue a visa to relatives of OFW’s. They said it is a rule of their immigration and OFW’s are not allowed to invite too. What should I do?

Hello Ms. Betchay,

My husband is an OFW in SK under POEA EPS program. He went back to our country last Dec 2008 and we got married on Feb 2009. I’ve read one comment here that she wanted to apply for a spouse visa. I just want to make it clear, does spouse visa applicable only to Filipino nationality married to Korean? If not, it would be best to visit my husband thru tourist visa. And one of the requirements is certificate of employment but unfortunately, I’m not currently employed. Does the embassy will still approve my visa application thinking that my husband is working in Korea? Do you have any idea regarding figure of amount in bank certificate? Does the embassy call your bank for confirmation? Please advice…this site really helps a lot.
Thank you…..
