UPDATE: You might want to read this simpler entry for the REQUIREMENTS IN APPLYING FOR A TOURIST VISA (C-3) TO KOREA.
If you’re a Filipino and you want to go to Korea, the first thing that you must do is to acquire a visa… and it isn’t easy!
More than a decade ago, visas are not required for Pinoys. They can come and go as much as they wanted but things changed in 1994 when the Philippine government requested to the Korean government to require visas for Filipinos travelling to their country. That’s what I learned from watching “Magandang Gabi Bayan” three or four years ago.
Let me talk about the individual tourist visa. I had applied for a tourist visa almost three years ago but I was turned down for some reason. I wasn’t disheartened but my hubby (then fiance) was… I remember reading an article where DOLE secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas said that it’s harder to get a Korean tourist visa than to get a US visa. It’s probably true…
Unlike a US visa application, there is no interview conducted when applying for a Korean tourist visa. They also don’t require additional documents like land titles or car registration, and the likes. What you will need to provide them are… (1) bank certificate stating your savings, (2) certificate of employment showing your salary and position, (3) latest ITR (income tax return), (4) your passport and a copy, plus the (5) visa application form and (6) 2×2 pictures and if you have been invited, (7) a notarized invitation letter.
You have to go to the embassy really early! They open at 9AM but you have to line up outside before they let you in. Where do you have to go? The Korean Embassy is located at Pacific Star Building at the corners of Gil Puyat Ave. and Makati Ave. Right in front of a gas station, you can’t miss it!
When I applied for my tourist visa, I was there as early as 7AM and the line was already long… After arriving at the place, just follow the queue outside. At around 10 minutes before 9AM, the guard will let people in. You have to get a Visitor’s Pass by providing an ID. It doesn’t have to be a fancy ID, the one issued by the postal office will do. You’ll have to ride the elevator and get off on the 18th floor. There will be another line before entering the main office. The guard (who’s really friendly and nice) will ask you if it’s your first time to apply for a visa (in general) or not. If it is then he will give you a number for Window 3. If not, then you’ll be provided a number for Window 4. You’ll have to sit down and wait until it is your turn. The Korean lady on Window 3 is Ms. Park Ok (at least, the last time I was there)…
When your number is shown on the LCD display, you’ll have to go to Window 3 and present your documents. Like I told you, there’s no need for an interview. If your documents are complete, she’ll staple them and give you a claim stub for your passport. If you have submitted an incomplete set of documents, she’ll ask you to come back and complete your documents. If you’re planning to stay in Korea for more than 59 days, you’ll have to pay 1,500 pesos as visa fee. A stay of less than 59 days is free. Paying doesn’t guarantee an approval.
Application usually ends at 12PM. If your number is not called at that time, you’ll have to come back another day and fall in line, and get another number! Hehe…
Waiting time is usually 7 days. To claim your passport, you’ll have to come in the afternoon of the designated date in your claim stub. Again, you’ll have to queue outside and wait for the embassy to open. I really hate waiting because it makes me all nervous and excited!
If you get a visa, congratulations! If not, then try again later… after 6 months!
My mother applied for a tourist visa two weeks ago and got hers last Tuesday. She’s been here last year for our wedding and it just took her three days to get her visa. We sent her a notarized invitation last year but not for this year. She has a US resident visa so that probably helped her. Anyway, she’s planning to come here on the 7th of August via Asiana Airlines (whose unionized pilots are currently on strike) from the Clark International Airport. The airport is a 15-minute drive from our residence in Angeles City (we live about 200 meters from the gates of Clark).

Hi guys we don’t need a visa to go to South Korea only in Jeju island for 30 days. In other areas of South Korea we need visa even if just 3 days…
how much money in the philippines do i need to approve my koren visa?
hello ms betchay! dis is anne once again. i just wondering, my mother in law told me that South Korean embassy has implemented new rules already for tourist..If u apply for 30 days or 15 days to stay, the embassy shall grant only the days you write in the application paper..they don’t extend another 60 days..is this true?
I’m planning to go this coming feb or this qtr of d year, but she told me that kind of new rules implemented this jan ’09..i just want to ask if this is true? thanks in advance…more power
i need help!
i need visa before this weekend.
i have submitted my application this monday but was given a release date on feb 2.
i faxed them a request letter along with other supporting documents.
how long does it take for my tourist visa be processed?
it’s my first time to go abroad too.
is my fate in vain? what do you think?
Hi!
It’s me again… I’m almost done with all of my requirements (and I have opted not to go with a travel agent)… I was just wondering though, where can I get the application form??? That’s the only thing I’m missing. Is it like the application form for the US Embassy where you just download it online and print it out?
Thanks! xx
Hi! i would like to answer your question. i’ve just been to the Korean Embassy yesterday. I have all the requirements too with an accomplished application form. but when i got there, i was given another form to fill up. well….everyone did have to fill it up there.
Goodluck! hope you get a visa!!!
Awesome Cecille! Thanks for that information. So I guess it doesn’t have to be typewritten after all…
That’s good to know. I’ll probably head on over to the South Korean Embassy on Monday. Good luck on your visa as well! By the way, when do you need to come back? I heard it only takes 3-4 days? Hmmmm…
Thanks!!! i will be back to the Embassy on Tuesday to get my passport. based on my experience, yes it only takes about 3-4 working days. the first time i applied, it was on a Tuesday…..i was asked to be back on Friday.
Ooohhh… Nice
Quite fast ah. Thought It would take 2 weeks. What time do you reckon’s a good time to get there? Like, how early?
Thanks so much! xx
i was there before 6am and i was 2nd in line. i suggest you be there as early. you will have to wait in line til 8:30 though. it’s only then will u be allowed to get inside the building. the embassy starts accepting applications at 9am. since i was no. 2, as early as 9:10 i was done with my application.
hello po ate betchay ask lang sana ako kung saan matatagpuan diyan ang philippine consulate sa korea. kasi dun daw kailangan ipa register yung marriage contract para makakuha kami at may record na dito sa nso ang kasal ng sister in law ko. I need ur response asap. THANKS!
Hey Cecille!
Thanks for all the information you gave me!
Highly appreciated… Anyway, I went to the Korean Embassy this morning and will be back on February 9th. A bit longer than I anticipated but oh well… I guess that’s suspense at it’s best LOL. I was 12th in line LOL but I think I was the only one there applying for a tourist visa. Everyone else in line was there for their work visa so that’s how I became first for window 3. Oh well, I guess it’s just all about waiting now. Kinda sucks cos I wanted to know before Saturday sana if I have a visa or not because there’s this travel expo thing that I’m going to and I was hoping to score some sweet deals on tickets to Korea. Oh well… I’ll let you know if I get one or not…again, thanks for all the information and good luck on your visa as well!
xx
you’re most welcome! i’ll let you know too. i will get my passport (hopefully with a visa) tomorrow afternoon. heard about the travel expo too. Rakso travel sent me an invite through email.
when do u intend to leave? will u be there on a package tour? i was there the first time on my own and i had a great time. makes me want to do it again:). well…it all depends on the tomorrow’s result.
just keep praying for the best….Goodluck!!!!!
Will you be going to the expo? I’m hoping to get some good deals on tickets…so many travel plans for this year! My oh my…
I intend to leave either 3rd week of April or 3rd week of May and I’ll be there either for either 9 days or 16 days. All depends on my boss if she’ll let me go on leave for 2 straight work weeks… Still a few months away but I’d like to have my stuff organized and all set a few months in advance. How about you? I’m actually going to be traveling alone. No package tour for me =P… Will meet up with some old friends along the way as well..that is, if I get a visa… so yeah, keeping my fingers crossed! =D
i might go to the expo if i dont get a booking using my Worldperks award flights. i plan to leave on March 6 and stay there probably for 3 weeks. 2 weeks wasnt really enough for me to unwind. well….judgement day for me. will keep you posted.
hello ms. morenabeachbum!!

Wow! That’s great! I’m glad you were given a visa! Korea here I come (again) for you… =P

Hey Cecille,
Got my visa yesterday… =D yay! I was given one that’s valid for 30 days… Have you made your booking yet? I’ll probably leave on April 18th…
hi there! Congratulations!!!
what do you mean……you also got 30days of stay??? WOW!!!
Yes, I’m booked to fly on March 2. I will be back March 21. I’m taking Northwest Airlines. I would love to stay a little longer pa sana but yun lang ang available return date using my Worldperks Miles. Do you plan to stay there for 30 days or longer?
Hey Cecille!
Yeah, that’s what I meant
I’m booked for April 18th coming back on the 26th… staying for a little over a week. Going on Korean Air. I’ve started researching about the shopping areas in Seoul and Suwon. I’m getting super excited! Is shopping good there? I heard Myeong Dong (I’m so sure I spelled that wrong) is quite an expensive place to shop but with good stores? Where would you recommend shopping where there’s good value for money?
What else is there to do there??? I’m so excited!
mom jo sim he!!!
hello ms. morenabeachbum!
that’s very nice! you got 30 days o your first try. why such a short vacation? i didnt do much shopping last time. i just went around Pusan. didnt get to see Seoul. it was more of a well-deserved rest for me.
i too am doing some search for places to visit…..hope to see Seoul this time. Excited na rin ako…..getting fed up with work now.
will u be on a package tour? are you travelling alone too?
Hi Cecille!
Yeah, I’m quite thankful I got that long of a validity period even though I wont be maxing it out. I’ll only be there for 9 days…and this is because work is really picking up this time of year and taking off 2 work weeks straight is a big no-no BUT since I really need a vacation, I’m settling for the 9 day leave
. I’m actually going there alone but I’ll be staying at a friend’s house. He’s working there as an English teacher and we went to school together back in Elementary and Junior High so it should be quite a reunion. Of course he’ll be at work during the afternoon so that gives me time to explore on my own but during the weekends I’m sure he has some crazy things planned. I was able to find out where the main shopping areas are in Seoul and I’m planning on seeing the World Cup stadium as well as the Suwon fortress but that’s all I have in terms of an “itinerary” (you probably can’t really even call it a proper one. LOL) What do you have planned?
to morenabeachbum,
Hi congrats to your success in getting your visa. btw, in what agency did u ask assistance for visa? was this agency the one which submitted your requirements to the embassy? how much was in your bank certificate? how many days of stay did you indicate? did u have an invitation letter from korea? or a package tour?
hi ms. morenabeachbum! i’ll be going alone too. but no friend to take me around on weekends. i’ll probably finish searching for possible places to visit this weekend. work started piling up yesterday. have to really work on my search or else i’ll end up sleeping all day and all night at the hotel. i only have two weeks now.
keep in touch….
have a great weekend!!!
Hi Lou,
Thanks! I actually didn’t go through an agency. I decided to just do the whole process by myself. I had two bank certificates, one for my peso account and one for my dollar account. It really wasn’t much money. I actually just put my money in the last minute for my peso account because I don’t really save in banks. I usually just keep my money at home. LOL. I indicated that I’d be staying for 9-16 days…and lastly, no I didn’t have an invitation letter from Korea and I’m also NOT on package tour.
Will you be applying for your visa soon? If so, goodluck with that!
Hi Cecille,
Wow! 2 weeks! I’m excited for you! LOL… I have about 2 months!
Work has piled up as well. If I find out some good places for you to go to I’ll let you know! Have a great weekend!
to morenabeachbum:
sa seoul pa lang marami ka na mapupuntahan like the Palaces, drama shoot locations, if you watched the coffee prince you can ask your friend to take you to the coffee shop where they shot the drama. cheonggyecheon- you must visit it too, it’s going to be spring by the time you get here so at least the plants are getting back their glory and ate Betchay’s place is near the area. shopping centers here are okay– a little like greenhills style-parang kulang pa buong maghapon to round each shopping center. i recommend you also go to beauty or cosmetics shops.. baka mga yun pa bilhin mo, kkk… but try to visit the countryside too- ask your friend to searh for the nearest Korean Folk Village na pwede ka nya ipasyal.. if you appreciate the cultural and traditional Korea, don’t miss a Korean Folk Village… and also, try out their Jjimjilbang… and then ride a downtown bus (green bus) that makes its rounds around seoul, so you can really see the different areas..
jehans last blog post..Korean Valentine’s Day
for a 9 days stay, i think the above-mentioned itinerary would satisfy your eyes, heart, body, and mind.. just keep on searching for places from ate Betchay’s blog too..
jehans last blog post..Korean Valentine’s Day
oh, forgot again, of course– korean food too for the delight of your palate….
please paki answer po ako agad. thanks and GOd bless..
Hi jehan,
Thank you so much for all of that wonderful information! My oh my! Now I have a ton of things to do now, I may not even have enough time to get all those done!
Shopping for sure will take up a lot of time. Haha! And yes, beauty and cosmetics shopping is on my list. Looking out for those nail art kits that they sell there… I am definitely super excited! Thanks again! You rock!

tnx…
hi clem! hindi ko napansin agad ang comment mo… anyway same requirements pa rin daw and complete documents pa rin talaga required nila… as for the invitation letter, it’s really optional
morenabeachbum, hope you dont mind me askin, is this your first time to apply a korean visa?
mam betchay, i just would like to ask if it’s possible for me to go to korea even my bf is not korean? where could he get an invitaion letter for me? we really have no idea..hope to get an answer.THANKS.
hi anna! you can come as a tourist… the invitation letter is optional and can only be issued by a korean… if your bf is not korean then you don’t need to bring an invitation letter when you apply for the visa… just bring your latest ITR, certificate employment, bank certificate, passport, ID picture and an application form (you can fill it out at the embassy)
hi des! kung korean ang hipag mo, tatanggapin naman ng embassy… as for the money, wala talagang specific na amount pero the more the better di ba?
mam betchay thank you po sa info…san po ba kumukuha ng application form, isa daw po yun sa mga requirements.?
